During an first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Governing with Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for fear of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Challenges

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering basic services: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
