Top-Flight Updates: Mejbri Suspended for Misconduct; Guardiola Insists 'Defence Must Get Better'
From the world of Premier League developments, a key player was handed a lengthy suspension, a manager has pointed to a defender's errors to make a point, and the Manchester City manager has demanded backline improvements following a wild victory.
1. Mejbri Handed Four-Match Ban and Fine
The Clarets' player Hannibal Mejbri was issued a four-game ban and a financial penalty following misconduct during October's match versus Leeds United. The Football Association said the player faced a separate disciplinary panel after an incident of spitting in the direction of visiting fans at the 67-minute point of a 2-0 victory by Burnley.
An FA statement said: “An independent Regulatory Commission has punished the Hannibal Mejbri for his actions in the Premier League game against Leeds on 18 October. The charge was that the player acted in breach of the laws of the game or in a poor way by using abusive and indecent conduct through spitting at or in the area of Leeds United fans.”
It added, “Mejbri later admitted the allegation, and the panel handing down a four-match suspension and a fine after proceedings. The Regulatory Commission’s full explanation for the sanction will be published in due course.” Burnley, now in 19th place in the Premier League table, travel to 12th-place Newcastle on Saturday.
2. Maresca Points to Tosin's Mistakes to Make a Point
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has stated that a lack of experience is not an issue at team, highlighting that centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo's age did not stop the 28-year-old from having a bad game in the defeat to Leeds United.
Maresca, who manages the youngest squad in the Premier League, rejected the idea that inexperience played a part in the setback. He presented his case by singling out Tosin, Chelsea's oldest outfield player in the lineup, who produced a mistake-riddled performance in central defence.
“People always talk about experience when we drop points,” the coach stated. “After we beat Barcelona, we drew against Arsenal, no one was mentioning older players. I know that when we don’t win, people are always looking for the reason why, but I think why we didn’t win to Leeds was not down to the experience, it’s because we just weren't at our best.”
He added, “Who is the oldest one on our team on the pitch? It was Tosin. Did he play good? So, it isn't related to experience. It's that those 11 players, they were simply not up to standard.”
3. Guardiola Says Defence 'Has to Get Better'
Pep Guardiola has insisted his team have learnt from their midweek scare against Fulham and the episode has now been in the past. The team held on to claim a 5-4 win during a remarkable clash on Tuesday, after leading 5-1 with almost 60 minutes gone.
This followed they resisted a Leeds fightback to win 3-2 in the previous fixture, it raised further doubts about if they are the defensive steel required to sustain a title challenge to leaders Arsenal. “That game is forgotten,” he said. “Valuable lessons, I hope. In the Premier League, at all the clubs, one must learn from both good and bad in the good things and results and think of what's next.”
“Naturally I am worried,” he admitted. “We are trying to analyse what happened, so as not to allow so many goals. After conceding three by Leeds, and the five by Fulham you can see our versions, right? So, always we have done plenty of good things. Yet the number of attempts had Leeds have? Three? Scored two. That ratio is bad. How many attempts did Fulham have? Five, six? So, our ratio of chances conceded we can see is high. We have to improve.”
4. Newcastle Prioritise New Livramento and Botman Deals
Newcastle United's recently appointed football chief, Ross Wilson, has made new deal negotiations involving important defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his agenda at St James’ Park. Wilson arrived from Nottingham Forest recently and was reassured that playmaker Sandro Tonali is on a deal that runs until 2029 with an option until 2030.
This allows Wilson free to focus on talks with Livramento and Botman's agents. With the former’s current deal set to expire in 2027 and Botman's in 2028, the club's efforts are being treated with a certain importance.
“My first few days in the job was when I found that Sandro’s contract situation was much more secure than the one I was expecting,” he stated. “However, it is well known that the club would want to extend Tino’s deal and we wants to extend Sven Botman’s too. These talks are underway.”
Manager Eddie Howe will be without Botman for the home game against Burnley on Saturday, with the defender expected to remain out for at least a further period.
Nuno Says Paquetá Returns for West Ham
The Hammers' manager Nuno Espírito Santo has confirmed that Lucas Paquetá is back to the starting lineup when they play Brighton this Sunday, having completed a ban for the red card he received Liverpool.
“That incident is in the past,” the manager said. “I am positive it won't happen again because he personally admitted his mistake. We discussed it in the dressing room. I am positive the matter is closed and it will not happen again.”
He also acknowledged the intense strain on his side, who are in the relegation zone before Saturday's fixtures. “We can't ignore it,” he admitted. “It is the situation. We have to face it. We're fighting for our top-flight status. We cannot hide it.”
Arteta Pleased with Striker Stand-in Merino
Mikel Merino may keep his place as Arsenal’s centre-forward even when their regular strikers return from injury. The midfielder has been deployed as an emergency No 9 because of injuries for Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
He scored the first goal versus Brentford and set up Bukayo Saka for their second goal in a 2-0 win that maintained {their|
