The defender will be absent from the English team's FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Latvia due to a physical issue and the defender – who did not take part in England's three-nil exhibition win over Wales at Wembley – will return to his club Bayer Leverkusen.
The former Liverpool defender has been a regular in Leverkusen's defence this campaign but the national squad said no additional team replacements were arranged for the qualifier in the Latvian capital on Tuesday.
The English side could earn a place for next year's FIFA World Cup with two matches to spare if they overcome their opponents on this Tuesday and outcomes in other matches in Group K go their way.
