Australian authorities have ended the hunt for a young boy who has been disappeared in the wilderness for nearly three weeks, after renewed efforts proved unsuccessful to discover any signs of the boy.

The child was last seen engaging near his residence on a remote farmland near Yunta, about a significant distance from Adelaide, on 27 September.

His grandparent left him alone for about half an hour before returning, only to discover the youngster gone, initiating one of the biggest comprehensive searches in South Australian history.

Police - who do not believe criminal activity - say they will persist examining, but that the case has become a "recovery operation".

Recently, officials briefly wound down the search, only to resume it on Tuesday alongside 80 military personnel.
