Exceptional Scarlet Electrical Discharge Photographed in the Atmosphere

Three photographers operating in New Zealand have successfully captured visual evidence of red lightning, among the rarest atmospheric displays on Earth, in which bright red bursts become visible in the heavens.

A Memorable Night of Discovery

The imaging specialists had originally set out to capture the night sky over the unique geological structures in the southern region of the country on 11 October, when they chanced upon the extraordinary event.

They thought they would be fortunate to get good weather that after-dark period, but their night turned into “a truly memorable experience,” a team member commented.

While reviewing his photographs for a Milky Way panorama and realized he had recorded red sprites,” the photographer explained. “It was unbelievable – we experienced excited exclamations and numerous expressions in the darkness.”

Defining Red Sprites

Red sprites are bursts of electrical energy in the upper atmosphere, produced by electrical storms. Differing from traditional lightning that strikes downward to the ground, these events propel upward towards the upper atmosphere, creating structures that resemble pillars, root vegetables or even marine creatures. The first photograph of a red sprite was captured – unintentionally – in that year, by a research unit at the University of Minnesota.

Momentary and Otherworldly Sightings

They are so brief – lasting just a millisecond – that they are rarely visible to the human sight, but an individual had a lucky break. “By chance, I was gazing directly at one when it took place – an ideal happenstance looking at the appropriate section of the sky and I witnessed a brief red flash,” he explained.

Observing the phenomena was a goal for this individual, an award-winning night scape photographer. “It seems that you witness an unreal vision, it feels otherworldly … it’s this very deep red colour that is present only momentarily, so it’s really interesting to see.”

Technical and Artistic Mastery

Photographing a red sprite needs a proficiency with technical photography, as well as an knowledge about science and creative flare, the photographer stated. “This is a highly complex type of photography that’s extremely satisfying as well.”

A different team member commented it was one of the “most incredible evenings” of his existence. “I witnessed the starry river illuminating above the skyline while these massive crimson strands of energy moved above a storm hundreds of kilometres away,” he explained.

A Unique Photographic Achievement

To his knowledge, there are no additional photographs showing red sprites and the galactic core from the southern perspective in the same photograph.

“This was a singular occasion when you understand you are observing something you’ll probably never see again.”
