British Expands Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Warning List with Eleven Countries

British government has included an additional eleven new countries to its public alert roster concerning the threats of methanol poisoning from contaminated beverages.

This revised warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after evidence showing "a global increase in the number of reported cases" of toxic alcohol toxicity.

Just a few weeks ago, the government had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, in response to a number of serious cases such as the deadly demise of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being cautions that even small amounts of industrial alcohol can cause permanent eye damage or death within 12–48 hrs.

What is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol commonly employed in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. This substance is not designed for ingestion.

Although it is inherently formed during the creation of beverages, licensed producers bring it down to low, safe levels for ingestion through the refining procedure.

But in some countries, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to cut costs, and as it is tasteless and smell-free, it is impossible to identify.

Government Guidance for Travelers

Foreign Office official Hamish Falconer stated that every traveler should know the indicators of toxic alcohol toxicity.

"If you're consuming alcohol overseas, choose well-known venues and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or free shots," Falconer advised.

"In case something seems unusual, such as a headache that's way worse than typical or vision problems – get medical help immediately."

The entire list of nations noted as posing a risk of toxic alcohol contamination currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
